To be or not to be: reassessing the origins of portable art in the Cantabrian Region (Northern Spain)

Abstract The characterization of the first portable artistic depictions in Cantabrian Spain is crucial for comprehension symbolic development Neandertals and Homo sapiens context passage from Middle to Upper Paleolithic. However, despite importance these graphic representations, their study has tended lack application suitable methodologies be able discriminate between activity other kind alterations (use-wear, taphonomic, or post-depositional). present examined a significant sample Paleolithic lithic osseous objects that have been cited as evidence literature. contexts which were found considered, analyzed through microscopic observation marks distinguish incisions, pecking, engraving made non-functional purpose (graphic activity) those generated by diverse functional actions taphonomic processes (cutmarks, trampling, root marks, percussion scars, use-wear). results show some regional display incisions are neither nor whose characteristics similar attributed Europe Near East. In turn, art produced seems limited mostly linear signs, no figurative representation can recognized until Gravettian. This appears indicate particular idiosyncrasy region Early Paleolithic, which, comparison with regions such south-west France Swabian Jura, shows later less abundant production art.
